How it is measured

Breed standards give a Labrador's height at the withers, the ridge between the shoulder blades. The AKC standard also sets proportions. The distance from the elbow to the ground should be half the height at the withers. The length from the point of the shoulder to the point of the rump should be equal to or slightly longer than the distance from the withers to the ground.[2]

UK and US standards differ

The Royal Kennel Club sets an ideal of 56 to 57 cm (22 to 22.5 in) for dogs and 55 to 56 cm (21.5 to 22 in) for bitches. The FCI standard is almost the same. The American Kennel Club allows taller dogs: 22.5 to 24.5 in (57 to 62 cm) for males and 21.5 to 23.5 in (55 to 60 cm) for females. In AKC shows, a dog more than half an inch outside its range is disqualified, though the minimum does not apply to dogs under twelve months.[1][2][3]
