What is measured

A MiniDisc is a small optical disc that is always kept inside a plastic cartridge with a sliding door. The cartridge measures 68 x 72 x 5 mm (2.68 x 2.83 x 0.20 in). The disc inside is 64 mm (2.52 in) in diameter. The sources give 68 x 72 mm in one order and 72 x 68 mm in the other, so which side is the width is a matter of convention.[1][2][3]

Compared with a CD

A standard CD is 120 mm (4.7 in) across, almost twice the 64 mm diameter of the MiniDisc. Wikipedia describes the cartridge as similar to the casing of a 3.5-inch floppy disk. The format offered 60, 74 or 80 minutes of audio, and its ATRAC compression was devised to give it the same runtime as a CD.[1][4]

Why the cartridge

The disc is fixed inside the cartridge, so it is not handled directly. When Silicon Chip covered the format in October 1993, it described the housing as 72 x 68 mm and 5 mm thick, and the disc as 64 mm.[1][3]

Did you know?

Sony released the MiniDisc in November 1992; a disc held 60, 74 or 80 minutes of audio.
