How strawberry size is measured
Strawberries are sized by width, not length. The USDA grade standard defines diameter as the greatest dimension measured at right angles to a straight line running from the stem to the apex. In other words, you measure across the widest part of the berry. The EU standard also sizes strawberries by the maximum diameter of the equatorial section and sets minimums of 25 mm for Extra class and 18 mm for Classes I and II.[2][3]
Grades and size classes
To be graded U.S. No. 1, each strawberry must be at least 3/4 in (1.9 cm) across unless otherwise specified, and up to 5 percent of berries in a lot may be below the minimum. U.S. No. 2 berries must be at least 5/8 in (1.6 cm). USDA nutrition data uses four reference sizes: small at 1 in (2.5 cm), medium at 1 1/4 in (3.2 cm), large at 1 3/8 in (3.5 cm) and extra large at 1 5/8 in (4.1 cm). A medium berry weighs about 12 g.[1][2]
Size and weight
Strawberry weight rises fast with width. USDA lists a 1 in (2.5 cm) small berry at about 7 g, a 1 1/4 in (3.2 cm) medium berry at about 12 g, and a 1 5/8 in (4.1 cm) extra large berry at about 27 g. An extra large berry is less than twice as wide as a small one but weighs nearly four times as much. A cup of whole berries weighs about 144 g.[1]

Each “seed” on a strawberry is really an achene: a tiny fruit with its own seed inside.
